NELI announced as EEF Promising Programme

The Nuffield Early Language Intervention has been selected as an EEF Promising Programme for its promise in raising student attainment

Today, the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) have announced the Nuffield Early Language Intervention (NELI) as one of its Promising Programmes. Promising Programmes are programme EEF have tested and have shown promising results on pupil attainment.

NELI is a comprehensive programme of assessment, training and intervention supporting speech and language in the early years. It provides schools with a way of identifying and remediating early language difficulties and is proven to improve children’s language skills and behaviour in schools.

NELI was developed out of decades of research into children’s early language development. A series of Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) – the gold standard for measuring the effectiveness of an intervention – and Independent Evaluations have made NELI the best-evidenced oral language intervention in the world and shown that it brings about educationally meaningful improvements.

Charles Hulme, CEO & Founder said, “On behalf of the whole team behind NELI at OxEd & Assessment, I could not be more proud that we have been selected as a promising programme. Time and time again, research shows that NELI makes a significant impact on children’s oral language skills and improving their overall educational outcomes.

Key findings include:

  • NELI children made 3-5 months’ additional progress in language skills in just six months
  • Children from less advantaged backgrounds made an average 7 months additional progress in their language skills.
  • Children with English as an Additional Language (EAL) made the same additional progress as children speaking English at home
  • NELI children’s behaviour was shown to improve significantly (compared to the control group)
  • NELI’s positive effects can be seen long-term, with improvements in language and word-reading being seen in children two years after the intervention.
